About the Digital Cities Project

Digital Cities is a three-year project (November 2008 to December 2011) working to improve ICT adoption by European local authorities in geographically isolated areas and in areas of social exclusion – especially in non-metropolitan environments.
Low ICT adoption commonly results in:

  • low levels of local business competitiveness
  • difficulty in attracting and sustaining new business investments
  • knowledge gaps and understanding citizens needs – especially in areas with higher levels of transient populations
  • limiting the opportunities for financial transactions with visiting or passing trade.

The Digital Cities – DC – project will produce case studies, recommending frameworks, organisational structures, strategies, policies and tools as part of ‘the DC Model’ – to support others wishing to benefit from the adoption of ICT.
